In Aotearoa, there is a growing and urgent need for aged care services that truly honour the cultural values, languages, and traditions of our Māori and Pasifika kaumātua. The current system often falls short in providing the holistic and affirming environment our elders deserve. This is why TĀ UPEGA TRUST is proud to introduce our long-term vision: the establishment of the Pasifika Village (Rest Home), a benchmark for culturally responsive aged care.
The Vision
Imagine a place where our kaumātua not only receive excellent care but thrive, surrounded by their language, their culture, and their community. The Pasifika Village will be designed as a vibrant, nurturing home where elders can share their wisdom, maintain strong intergenerational connections, and participate in meaningful cultural activities. It will be deeply grounded in Te Ao Māori and Pasifika frameworks and Fonofale models, promoting spiritual, mental, physical, and family well-being. This ambitious project builds directly upon the success and learnings from our current Kaumātua Programme, ensuring a seamless transition and enhanced support for our cherished elders. Our team’s collective experience in developing community programs for elders uniquely positions us to bring this vision to life.
Why This Matters
Auckland is home to the largest Polynesian population in the world, and both Māori and Pasifika populations are growing, with a significant increase in their elder demographics. Statistics show that culturally appropriate aged care facilities are severely lacking. For many Māori and Pasifika elders, the current mainstream care models can lead to feelings of isolation and a disconnection from their cultural identity, which is crucial for their overall well-being. The Pasifika Village will address this critical gap, providing a space where our elders are understood, celebrated, and truly feel at home, ensuring their physical, spiritual, and cultural needs are met with dignity and respect.
Our Progress & Next Steps
We are currently in the vital feasibility and planning phase for the Pasifika Village. This includes comprehensive market analysis to understand demand, identifying suitable site considerations, researching regulatory requirements, and engaging deeply with community members, iwi, and Pacific leaders to ensure the Village reflects their aspirations. While we’re building the foundations, we continue to deliver our impactful Kaumātua Programme, preparing the ground for this truly transformative project.
